Thanksgiving
I
love Thanksgiving. Really, it's a holiday that we
can almost all agree on, it seems. It's hard to argue
with a day where we all count our blessings and reflect
on things that are meaningful to us.
Plus,
for me, it's the beginning of the Christmas season.
While I'm well aware that not everyone celebrates
Christmas, I do, and I love it. It's a fun time of
year, and I get very sentimental for all the trappings:
the tree, the lights, the gifts, the food, the carols,
and so on. I get very cranky, however, if anyone tries
to make me think about Christmas before Thanksgiving.
Doing so reminds me that, for so much of America,
Christmas is just a time of increased earnings and
stress, with very little meaning (religious or otherwise).
I harbor no misconceptions about how fortunate I am,
and therefore am more than willing to discuss the
things that I am thankful for. A (probably incomplete)
list of some of big things I am thankful for this
year, in no particular order, would include:
1.
I am thankful that I live in the United States. I
may not agree with everything my country does, and
I know that we -- as a nation -- are far from perfect,
but I am very cognizant of the abundance of wealth,
food, safety, and freedom that the U.S. enjoys compared
to some other places in the world. I don't take those
things for granted.
2.
I am thankful for my job. I am fortunate enough to
be my own boss, working on projects that I love, working
the hours I want, with the ability to come and go
as I please. My job is fun, rewarding, stimulating
and a wonderful creative outlet.
3.
I am thankful for Sue. I am married to a wonderful,
beautiful woman. We get to spend a lot of time together
-- we're not just spouses, but we're business partners
as well. With every word I write, I know she's got
my back. Malhavoc Press would simply not exist without
her. But mostly I'm thankful for her because she's
just her, and that's perfect for me.
4.
I am thankful for my new dog, Rufus. He's really growing
fast, and he's turning out to be a really smart little
guy. We've taught him to sit, come, and stay already,
which I think is pretty impressive. Even if I am a
little biased. A friend of ours, Beth, referred to
him as a "little loaf of a dog," and that
image has really stuck with me. He's kind of the color
of a loaf of bread, and he's shaped (and now sized)
like one too. I'm glad he's around.
There
are a million other things to be thankful for this
year, but those are the things that jump to mind immediately.
I hope you have a very happy Thanksgiving.
